Tories to “build Labour out of London”

My second post based on (my interpretation) of an “Inside Housing” email bulletin. The title of the actual article is the slightly less controversial “Boris lets Tory council slash social housing”.

It refers to the decision by Boris’s deputy mayor, Ian Clement, to let Tory Council Hammersmith & Fulham approve a new large development with NO social housing at all. This was only just weeks after the GLA’s own planners branded it “unacceptable”. This is in White City, which is an area of massive waiting lists and housing need. The Council even owns the land.

In order to alleviate overcrowding developers are usually required to set aside a percentage of new build properties for social housing. The Tories reckon that the area already has enough social housing in that area so bringing in 100% private ownership will for example reduce “housing benefit” claims.

I am sure of course that this has nothing to do with past Tory Westminster Council “gerrymandering”. Obviously reserving this development for only private homebuyers has nothing to do with any attempt by this newly elected Tory Council to get rid of pesky social housing tenants? Who might even (God forbid) vote Labour in local elections? Of course not!

Labour minister Herbert Morrison was condemned for supposedly saying, while the leader of the pre war London County Council (LCC) that he would “build the Tories out of London”. He always denied actually saying this.

Never mind, it appears that this generation of Tories are prepared to exploit the human misery of housing need to further their own “Lebensraum”

(poster above is for what came to be known as a "Morrison Shelter")

They dont vote anyway

For God sake how many council houses did Labour build, how many council houses have Labour councils built since they came in, none.

John Prescott told the House of commons in 2004 that in the first six years of a labour Government an impressive 105,228 social houses had been built ... errr?...but only 1,343 of these were built by Local Councils? Which is a shame because the speed with which the economy is in nose dive a few more peole are going to be needing them soon. In contrast Baroness Thatchers Governemnt in its first six years built 360,000 council houses!

yes because they have provided social housing via housing associations

wrongly

but thats the fact and more than the Tories ever built

Hammersmith Tories say they want people to own their own houses then do everything possible to stop them

Tories for the rich

still the nasty party

Hi Anons
I note that there is no reference to the figures quoted about homes built under Thatcher’s first 6 years. However, knowing housing supply, most of these properties would have been built under agreements passed by the 1974-79 Labour government or Labour Councils (or the GLC – I use to work at Malmesbury Estate in Bow which was finished off in 1983ish and the last large GLC estate ever built.

This government should have built more new homes but decided that the priority was to bring up existing stock to decent homes standards following the 18 years of substandard investment by the Tories.

Tough choices.

Of course..anyhting achieved under Thatcher was actually the result of the brilliant previous labour administration - and we all know it takes six years to build a house....whats the excuse for Labours record..oh they were actually repairing them all..they were in a terrble state..guess this would also include the 360,000new ones built by the Conservatives..
