UNISON Labour Link Conference Social

Better late than never, final post on Labour Party conference 2007. On Wednesday evening last week in the UNISON Marquee (car park of Marriot Hotel) there was the highlight of conference – the UNISON Labour Link Social.

Thanks to Roger from Devon branch for the pictures.

Guest of honour was Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. We also saw Ben Bradshaw, Peter Hain, Alan Johnson, Lyn Brown, Andrew MacKinlay and Angela Eagle.

Who said that night it was good to be in a "trade union meeting without there being any Trots"? The speaker received a huge cheer from the packed fringe.

I couldn't possibly comment.

Each year a sum of my money gets paid to Labour I nolonger support Labour but do support the Union, sadly if they keep paying money to New Labour I will leave.

Hi Anon
You are perfectly entitled (but of course wrong) to your views on Labour (New or otherwise.

However, all levies are completely voluntary. In UNISON you can opt out of the Labour Link fund (APF)and join the non-labour party Political fund (GPF) or not pay any levy.

The real problem is that I have come across many UNISON members who are also members of the Labour Party but think they are paying the Labour levy but are not!

Your branch ought to be able to advise you.

But if all levies are voluntary then can't people opt out of both and save money? How does that happen?

Yep - no problem, if that is what people want then by law they can opt out.

However, I would point out that although a significant percentage of union members do NOT vote for Labour in elections (a mistake in my view). Most folk recognise that the Political funds do enable the union to punch above their weight with the employers!

Finally just to note that the "opt out" of political funds was one of the anti-trade unions laws introduced by Thatcher.

"punch above their weight?" this is a typical unionist speaking. Why are unions so confrontational?

Blimey Anon - if you think that remark is confrontational you better cover up your sensitive little ears during the forthcoming few weeks!
